Shop Diary: Getting Started

Finally getting started on a project that I’ve dreamed of since I was a little kid—surrounded by Encyclopedias and an imaginary register in the family guest room. A bookshop! Hopefully this will be the first of many Shop Diary entries to document the journey.

What I’ve done so far

I’ve done things a bit out of order. Instagram account created Tuesday, EIN application submitted Wednesday and Shop Diary Blog started on Thursday. First mistake, paying for the EIN application…that I’ve found out I didn’t actually need! I’m sure there will be more mistakes, I’m trying not to kick myself too hard for paying for government documents that are free…and that, again, as a sole proprietor I. DIDN’T. NEED.

Note: to other business owners, google searches aren’t always your best resource—those Sponsored results will get you

I’ve spent most of November researching how to become a bookseller. And told myself I’d try to make it as inexpensive as possible…clearly I need to keep saying that to myself, when I get the urge to pay for something I’m not familiar with.

Anyway, moving on from the mistake. I got to the point in my research, where I felt like I either need to do it or pivot to something else. There’s only so long you can research before you need to take action.

So, I’ve created my Instagram account—with no clue what to post first. Designed my logo on Canva, during the 2 week free trial. I’ll need to compare if Canva, Photoshop or Figma pricing is better for my needs.

If I’d done things in order, I would’ve started with the business plan…because I did need to do more research. And having a business plan would help me with having answers ready.

So next up I’m going to work on my business plan….
