Love that the story started and ended with the story of a meet cute.
I enjoyed the introduction of both main characters. We really get to learn more about them through the way that they’re each handling their breakups. The only common denominator is that they agreed to live with each other. Daphne is trying her best to disassociate and counting down the days until she can leave town. Miles is wallowing in his pain and hiding in his room. I was happy once they came up with their revenge plot – more reasons for them to interact and change each other!
Getting technical
I wouldn’t say that all of the scenes were done perfectly. Some revelations came out of nowhere for me, I had to rewind the audiobook to double check I heard correctly. I was thrown off and needed to make sure I’d followed the transition of the conversation properly. I still can’t quite understand a moment Miles and Daphne had in his truck. The reveal of his family history appeared out of nowhere for me. And one of my friends confirmed she also didn’t follow the transition. It was odd.
I like that Daphne is working on herself as she’s realized all her friends were her ex-fiancee’s friends, not hers. So finding her own people was a great way to show character growth. I’m not sure that there was any growth for Miles, he seemed pretty set in stone. So Daphne was the one finding herself, which is the more interesting story. Miles was sort of just there for her to choose or not…kind of sad.
You’ll love this book if…
You’ll love this book if you’re a fan of Emily Henry’s books. For anyone who’s already read her books…here’s my ranking from most liked to least liked: Beach Read, Book Lovers, Funny Story, People We Meet on Vacation, and Happy Place. I really find the title of Happy Place to be a misnomer, I was so sad while reading that book.
